Auschwitz was one of the largest Nazi concentration and death camps. This land is located in the southern part of Poland, Auschwitz initially served or was a detention center for the political prisoners. However, it evolved into a network of camps where the Jewish people and others perceived enemies of the Nazis that were exterminated, in the case of Alice she was going to be killed in a gas chamber. “Some prisoners were also subjected to barbaric medical experiments led by Josef Mengele (1911-79). During World War II (1939-45), more than 1 million people, by some accounts, lost their lives at Auschwitz. In January 1945, with the Soviet army approaching, Nazi officials ordered the camp abandoned and sent an estimated 60,000 prisoners on a forced march to other locations.” Most of the people make the same question, What is a Gas chamber? “ A Gas chamber were used as a method of execution for condemned prisoners in the United States beginning in the 1920s and continues to be a legal execution method in three states. During the Holocaust, large-scale gas chambers designed for mass killing were used by Nazi Germany as part of their genocide program, and also by the Independent State of Croatia at the Jasenovac concentration camp. The use of gas chambers in North Korea has also been reported."
“Several days later we arrived to Bergen-Belsen & Bergen-Belsen was hell on earth. Nothing ever in literature could compare to anything what Bergen-Belsen was. When we arrived, the dead were not carried away any more, you stepped over them, you fell over them if you couldn't walk. There were agonizing. people begging for water. They were felling. falling into planks that they were not pulled together in the barracks. They were crying, they were begging. It was, it was hell. It was hell.” Alice said.
Alice described that Germany occupied Hungary in 1944. Alice with this testimony told when she got deported to Auschwitz in the same year. At one time she was selected for the gas chamber, but survived because of a malfunction. As Allied forces approached the camp, Alice and other inmates were evacuated to the Guben labor camp. Alice, her sister, and another girl escaped during a forced march from the camp but were found and sent on to Bergen-Belsen. Alice's sister was taken to a Red Cross hospital, but Alice never saw her again. After the war, Alice immigrated to the United States.
The World War II was a “conflict that involved virtually every part of the world during the years 1939–45. The principal belligerents were the Axis powers—Germany, Italy, and Japan—and the Allies—France, Great Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union, and, to a lesser extent, China. The war was in many respects a continuation, after an uneasy 20-year hiatus, of the disputes left unsettled by World War I. The 40,000,000–50,000,000 deaths incurred in World War II make it the bloodiest conflict, as well as the largest war, in history.” The main theme of this story is how the people don't appreciate the freedom and the siblings life give. This we can clearly notice it when Alice says in her testimony “When we arrived, the dead were not carried away any more, you stepped over them, you fell over them if you couldn't walk. There were agonizing...people begging for water. They were feeling...falling into planks that they were not pulled together in the barracks. They were crying, they were begging. It was, it was hell. It was hell. Day and night. You couldn't escape the crying”. Now for the part of the siblings we can see in the testimony, “that Alice, her sister, and another girl escaped during a forced march from the camp but were found and sent on to Bergen-Belsen. Alice's sister was taken to a Red Cross hospital, but Alice never saw her again.” I think that this is a clear message for appreciating the family, the siblings, thank God that you are alive a in a great way.
As conclusion we can notice that Alice had a really bad and difficult moment when she got deported to Auschwitz. She was impressed of all what she had seen and get though, to look all the people on the floor agonizing. The main cause she is alive and that could give this testimony is because some technical problems that occurred in the Gas chamber. The message i think Alice wants to transmit is appreciate other people when they are far or near to you, just appreciate them that in any moment they can go and change your whole life.
